Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is required when decay reaches the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is located in the middle of the tooth and contains the nerves of the teeth (depicted as the red tissue inside of first tooth diagram above). Once decay reaches this pulp, the tooth becomes very painful, especially to cold and hot substances.

The canals within the roots of the tooth are then cleaned and the infected pulp tissue is removed. This process can be seen in the second tooth diagram above. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material. Afterwards, a final restoration, often a crown, is placed on the tooth.
